Stained Glass Repair and Restoration

At Scottish Stained Glass we feel it is our duty to preserve and protect these works of art for all time.

Beautiful and historic windows have been repaired and restored over the years by Scottish Stained Glass in Colorado. While we know most stained glass companies turn away this sort of work, we are happy to repair or restore anything from the wonderful historic cathedral window to the homemade piece of stained glass your mom made and gave you for Christmas.

Normally if a stained glass window is less than 50 years old it can be repaired simply and inexpensively

If the lead camping is still in good condition then it`s just a question of replacing the broken piece. For windows over 50 years old a full restoration may be required. This involves taking the panels completely apart and then saving all the glass to be reused. All the lead will be replaced and as the panel is rebuilt the old glass is reused and any broken pieces are matched for color and texture. The result is a stained glass window that will last another lifetime.

The old masters of stained glass worked entirely by hand and with glass cutters and equipment which was far inferior to what we have today. Despite these difficulties, they produced stained glass of incredible beauty and at Scottish Stained Glass we feel it is our duty to preserve and protect these works of art for all time.

Antique Stained Glass Restoration of Windows 50 – 150 Years Old

Restoration of antique glass requires both passion and patience. Perhaps the most difficult of all stained glass related tasks, a full restoration of a window involves taking the panel completely apart, cleaning all the glass and then putting the panel back together using all new lead camping. The results are incredible. You can actually see the way the original glass looked when it was brand new. Most of the glass colors and especially textures are no longer made so preservation of these relics is the only way to continue to enjoy their beauty for generations to come.

Reasons for Stained Glass Restoration

Almost all stained glass windows will undergo a restoration at least during their lifespan. Restoration is a complex process, but the outcome is well worth the investment and sometimes it cannot be avoided if the glass is in poor condition. Situations can arise that call for immediate repair. In these cases, the stained glass may have to be restored prior to the usual 50-75 year mark.

Hail Damage Repair for Stained Glass

In Colorado Springs, hail damage is the number one reason that stained glass has to be restored prematurely. While stained glass is sturdy by nature, if it’s struck repeatedly by golf ball sized hail, sections may crack or break. Gaping holes left behind by hail storms weaken the stained glass and put strain on the rest of the window, so it’s important to attend to hail damage as soon as possible. Our team will work with you to find a cost-effective solution for repairing your hail damaged stained glass window and restoring its beauty.

Stained Glass Damaged by Wind

While it may not seem like much of a threat, wind can be extremely destructive to stained glass windows. Strong winds push against the glass, causing it to develop a concave or convex surface, and may pull the glass away from the leading. Over time, this gradual damage can become severe, in which case restoration becomes necessary. For wind damaged stained glass, we remove the leading and replace it, then rebuild the window with the original glass.

Warped Leading

Stained glass windows are held together by thin strips of hardened lead, called caming. If the stained glass is located on a side of the building that receives a lot of daytime sun, then the leading may become too hot at points, eventually to the point where it softens. When soft, the leading bends out of shape, then hardens again in the cool evening air, becoming distorted over time. The best method for repair in these instances is to dissemble the window and replace the lead caming. Doing this can extend the lifetime of the stained glass significantly and increase its value.
