What Is Dalle Glass?
Dalle Glass is an abstract style of stained glass. The term “Dalle de Verre” comes from France and means “slabs of glass.” The glass used is much thicker than normal stained glass windows. The technique was originally created by Jean Gaudin in 1930, a famous Parisian artist who had a strong passion for mosaics.
Dalle Glass is produced by cutting out shapes from colored slabs of glass. These slabs are usually about 1 inch thick or greater. The glass is shaped, then enhanced around the edges using a chisel and hammer. This produces a faceted aesthetic and helps the glass catch light from various angles. The perfected pieces are then arranged in a design on a bed of flat sand. Next, a mortar is produced by pouring epoxy onto the sand. More sand is added (often a darker color) to fill in the remaining spaces and give the composition a finished look.
