An essential part of maintaining and caring for stained glass involves being aware of any signs of deterioration or damage. Though stained glass windows can last for centuries, just like any other piece of art, they’re still prone to experiencing normal wear. For this reason, it’s highly commonly that owners have their stained glass restored through remodeling and renovation. At Colorado Springs Stained Glass, we’re experts in stained glass repair and renovation. Below we’ve outlined our process for stained glass repair as well as a brief explanation about what causes deterioration.
Signs of Deterioration
Deterioration can be caused by oxidation, exposure to the elements, heat, and humidity. These factors can cause the leading in the panels to bend or sag, which puts pressure on the glass pieces. This may result in the glass cracking or even falling out of place. One can identify signs of deterioration by standing directly below the windows and gazing upward. If you notice any signs of bowing or discoloration, restoration may be in order.
Our Process for Stained Glass Remodeling & Renovation
At Colorado Springs Stained Glass, we have a very specific process for stained glass remodeling and renovation. We believe that by being thorough and following these detail-oriented steps, we can restore windows back to the full beauty.
Step one: removal.
The stained glass is safely removed from the building and transported to our workshop. A piece of ordinary glass is temporarily installed in its place to ensure continued functionality of the window in the meantime.
Step two: cleaning.
The windows are soaked in a bath of gentle cleansing solution for a period of time lasting up to two weeks. This helps to eliminate the presence of dirt, soot, or grime on the glass.
Step three: disassembly.
A replica is created of the original installation using photography or computer software to serve as a blueprint for later on. The windows are then disassembled by removing individual pieces of glass one at a time.
Step four: replacement.
All glass that is in good condition is set aside and stored for later use. Pieces that are broken too badly to be reused are replaced from our personal inventory. We always try to preserve as much of the original glass as possible.
Step five: reassembly.
The panel is put back together completely. New leading is used to hold the glass in place. The windows are then cemented and soldered and sometimes reinforced using steel bars.
Step six: completion.
The stained glass is returned to its original site where it is reinstalled. A piece of low-e safety glass may be fitted over the panel for an extra level of protection. The owner can enjoy the beauty of the windows for several decades longer.
